2010 GCC Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
1976 Men's Cross Country - Outstanding Team
The 1976 men’s cross-country team won the Southern California and state championship that year under first-year head coach Tom McMurray and was comprised of many local athletes. McMurray was inducted in the GCC Hall of Fame in 2008.
Rene Gonzales - Outstanding Athletic Achievement
Rene Gonzales was a tremendous baseball player for the Vaqueros in 1979-80 under head coach Steve Coots and later continued his collegiate career at Cal State Los Angeles. He was drafted in the fifth round by the Montreal Expos and Played for 13 years in the major leagues including two stints with the California Angeles and also the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers.
Karoline Tomicich - Outstanding Athletic Achievement
Karoline Tomicich was an outstanding tennis player for Terry Coblentz in 1999 and 2001 and earned an All-American honors in singles and doubles. She had great results at Ojai and in the Southern California and state tournaments both years and was ranked seventh in the state singles in 2001.
Ralph Turner - Outstanding Athletic Achievement
Ralph Turner was one of the greatest sprinters in Glendale College history and broke a long-standing school record by Olympic Gold medalist Frank Wykoff in the 220-yard run in 1963 that still stands at 20.7. Turner is also in the Burroughs Athletic Hall of Fame and had great duels with Hoover High great Forrest Beaty when the two schools would compete against each other in local dual meets.
Bill & Ethel Gallagher - Meritorious Service
Bill and Ethel Gallagher have been supporters of Glendale College and it’s athletic department for 40 years. Each on of their seven children attended the college and several competed in athletics for the Vaqueros and have supported various events including the Foundational Golf tournament. Bill was a charter member of the Foundation and Ethel has been a longtime member of the Patrons Club.
Ron Palmer - Pillar of Achievement
Ron Palmer played tennis and competed in track and field at Glendale from 1949-51 but earned more fame in 1958 and 1961as a badminton player representing the United States Thomas Cup international competitions around the world. He also helped the Redlands University men’s tennis team win the NAIA National Championship in 1954 and was inducted into the school’s inaugural hall of fame class in 1983.
